She's got the beat!

Written by on July 26, 2010 at 10:48 am

The day that most changed my life — not my wedding day, not the birth of my first or even second child — it was the day that I brought home my iPod. (I really hope that my husband and sons aren't keeping up on this blog!)

Okay, perhaps my iPod purchase wasn't quite as momentous as the other events that I mentioned, but still, it did revolutionize my training for the MS Challenge Walk. I suddenly had the ability to put together different walking playlists of music to inspire me during my walks. The playlists have two main things in common: a quick beat to keep my walking pace snappy, and good lyrics that I enjoy listening to. The walk list themes vary from show tunes to pop and everything in between, but they all keep me moving and humming for the many miles and hours that it takes to prepare for this event.

Walking without the music just isn't the same. The only long walks that I enjoy without music occur every fall on Cape Cod when I get to catch up with the many Challenge Walkers that I only get to see once a year.

Main Street Cafe live music

Written by on June 12, 2010 at 3:44 pm

The Main Street Cafe, home of Grotonā??s Acoustic Cafe, will host a free evening of live music on Friday, June 25 to help raise money for the battle against Multiple Sclerosis.

Featuring Groton's own Tim Kierstead, a guitar master and vocalist who recently opened for Ronnie Earl and has also opened for Jay Geils, the show will run from 6-9 PM at the Main Street Cafe, located at 159 Main Street. The cafe is already gaining notoriety as Groton's entertainment hot spot thanks to a Thursday night "Acoustic Cafe," featuring live music and an eclectic dinner menu.

Groton's Main Street CafeKierstead approached Main Street Cafe's Bob Wright with the idea for the benefit. "My girlfriend, Allison Parent has been diagnosed MS, and will be walking in the MS Challenge Event on Cape Cod. It's a great cause, so I wanted to help with my music," says Kierstead.

"As a member of the community, Main Street Cafe is excited to be able to be the venue for this benefit," says Bob Wright, co-owner. "Tim's music has been so well received here already, and we're happy to help our neighbors. It's a natural fit."

The MS Challenge Walk is a two-day, 50K experience that tests walkers strength and spirit, and makes an extraordinary difference in the lives of the 400,000 people living with the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. Allison Parent and her Dragonfly A's team is walking in September 2010. The funds raised from the MS Challenge Walk will not only support research to help create a world free of multiple sclerosis, but also provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS right now.
