This 30-second commercial airs on Comcast Jan 30–March 4:

Ken, a Worcester resident, joined the MS Challenge Walk in 2005, more than a decade after his mother was diagnosed. After walking for three years and 150 miles, he switched to the support crew and now rides his bicycle along the trail, providing whatever encouragement (and snacks!) he can to the 600 walkers. He is also on the event's steering committee and is this site's webmaster.

MS Challenge Walk 2011: The Movie

Written by on March 25, 2011 at 10:10 am

In a world where heroes can make a difference — there exists one weekend when they will do the impossible. The stars will align for hundreds of champions to come together and light a flame against the darkness, daring to defy their very fate. Friendships will be forged and all limits shattered, ensuring nothing will ever be the same.

The tragedy and the triumph has critics raving. "STUNNING," says Leonard Maltin. "A MASTERPIECE," according to Steve Sookikian. "TWO THUMBS UP" from Roger Ebert.

Starring YOU, MS Challenge Walk opens September 9, 2011, for a limited engagement of one weekend only. Watch the sneak preview, then get your tickets today!

Answering questions about MS

Written by on July 23, 2010 at 10:49 am

When you engage in fundraising for the MS Challenge Walk, you're not only raising money; you're also raising awareness. Despite MS afflicting 400,000 Americans, many people do not know exactly what this condition is or how it affects their loved ones. When confronted with questions about MS, you may not always have a good answer. If you try to be specific, you can watch their eyes glaze over as you explain that "multiple sclerosis is a neurological disorder in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheath that helps conduct electrical impulses throughout the nervous system" — what a mouthful! And even that biological perspective doesn't convey what it's like to live with MS. So how do you succinctly tell people what this cause is that you're walking 50K for?

Songwriter Kristie Salerno Kent can answer these questions for you, as she knows something about MS herself:

A few years after Kristie received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University, Kristie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis … She decided that she was not going to give up her dreams of performing just because of her MS diagnosis. Kristie took on the role of an MS Lifelines Ambassador and travels the country speaking and singing for others who are affected by the disease. Now her performances are for a purpose and not just entertainment.

Kristie doesn't have to come to your neighborhood to give a speech about MS. Her YouTube video, "The Show Must Go On", is something you can send to your friends and family to help them understand the experience and condition that is MS.

There are several more excellent videos that give other perspectives on multiple sclerosis. Since my mom has MS, one of my favorites is "My Fight with MS", by Kyle Surkovich, whose father has MS.

These videos will help you raise funds for and awareness of multiple sclerosis, bringing us a step closer to a world without it!

MS Challenge Walk 2009 captured in video

Written by on May 10, 2010 at 11:31 am

The MS Challenge Walk is an annual event that must be experienced to be appreciated. But some glimpse of the magical moments that constitute our weekend on the Cape was preserved in 2009 by Brenda Neary, Marsha Harris, and Mary Esper of Red Dirt Productions. From the opening ceremony to the closing parade, their cameras recorded our fundraising efforts in a series of videos that have since aired on Comcast Video on Demand and are now available on YouTube and Facebook.

These videos are not only great remembrances but also excellent promotional tools. The walk can be so hard to describe that sending these videos to your friends and family will help them see the people and places behind your words. Whether you're recruiting teammates or soliciting funds, this multimedia can help you get your message across, whether it be in 30 seconds, three minutes, or 19 minutes.

A video tour of the Cape Cod Rail Trail

Written by on August 5, 2009 at 11:13 am

The MS Challenge Walk sends hundreds of volunteers across the beautiful landscape of Massachusett's Cape Cod. Through neighborhoods, along shorelines, and across bridges, we'll walk along some of New England's finest scenery.

Much (but not all) of that route is along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which we'll be sharing with runners, pedestrians, and cyclists. It's a fun and safe place to enjoy the company of your fellow walkers.

If you would like to familiarize yourself with that path but can't get down to the Cape in the next month, you can vicariously experience the rail trail in this bicycle tour. The MS Challenge Walk does not begin at the CCRT's beginning, nor does it end at its end, but along the way we'll find ourselves on some of the same course taken by this bicylist in these sped-up videos.

Great feet of strength

The Central New England chapter of the National MS Society is on YouTube! Check out their videos, with more to come. The most recent one is this brief commercial for the MS Challenge Walk 2009:

For those of you who don't want to do the math, that's about 60,000,000 steps. Every time your foot hits the pavement, so are 600 others. Your feet have never been in better company.
