Challenge Walk housing — response required!

Written by on Jul 11, 2013

The MS Challenge Walk is fast approaching! There are just eight weeks until we'll be together on Cape Cod.

Important Form — Housing Survey

The online housing form is now available. Everyone attending the MS Challenge Walk must complete this form, regardless of where you are staying during the event weekend. (This form verifies your emergency contact information as well, so all walkers and crew need to fill it out, even if you're staying at a hotel, not the Sea Camps.) We will do everything we can to accommodate your needs, but priority will be given to those who return their forms first. Deadline to complete the form is August 1, 2013.

We will not be sending out paper forms, so if you are having trouble completing the form, or would like to complete the form over the phone with a member of the MS Challenge Walk team, please call 800-344-4867.

Travel Guide

Our Travel and Information Guide has all of the who/what/where's of the 2013 MS Challenge Walk. Use this guide to find directions to the Kalmus Beach Parking Area in Hyannis (where all walkers and crew park their cars for the weekend). The guide also has useful information on packing and the weekend schedule!

Training Walk

The next training walk will be held on Saturday, July 27th at D.W. Fields Park in Avon/Brockton, the starting address is 156 South St., Avon, MA. The walk is 10-15 miles in length with a start time of 8:00 AM. Walk the entire training route or as much as you wish to do. RSVP here!

Have any questions about housing? Feel free to e-mail or call me!

Fundraising

Walkers and Super Crew, how is your fundraising going? Raising $1,500 is a challenge for all walkers. Our goal is to support and encourage your fundraising efforts every step of the way. Crew members achieve "Super Crew" status by raising at least $200 for the MS Challenge Walk.

Our MS Challenge Blog offers many tips on fundraising.

MS Challenge Talk

Have you been listening to MS Challenge Talk?

The Challenge Blog has always been letting the MS community read stories and advice from veterans of the MS Challenge Walk. Now, you're able to hear from these pros directly, in a series of audio interviews. Called MS Challenge Talk, these recordings profile walkers who have accepted the challenge to walk 3 days and 50 miles. Each week, you'll hear from a different walker or volunteer about their connection to the cause, the training and fundraising tricks they've learned, and the memories they've made along the way.

These interviews are completely free and can be listened to anytime you want on the MS Challenge Blog. Every Monday until the walk a new episode will be posted.

Thank you to all the walkers and crew who have been interviewed as a part of our MS Challenge Talk series.

All the best,

Walk MS event season is upon us!

You can use any Walk MS event as a training walk for the MS Challenge Walk Cape Cod. You For MS Challenge Walkers, there are no registration fees or fundraising minimums to participate. To find a Walk MS event near you, visit www.walkms.org.

Five Good Reasons to Start Walking (Besides the MS Challenge Walk)

  1. Reduces cholesterol levels
  2. Decrease high blood pressure
  3. Reduces risk of heart disease
  4. Increases energy
  5. Decreases stress

Five Ways to Find Time for Training

  1. Use your lunch hour. Find a nice place to walk during lunch and use that time to get outside. It will not only help your physical self, but it's also great for work stress!
  2. Make it a family activity and hike with the entire family. It will be fun and you can spend some quality time with your family as well as train.
  3. Find a buddy. Having a buddy really helps to keep you motivated!
Set a schedule and keep it written down. Post it on your refrigerator and it will be a reminder.
  4. Reward yourself! Set goals and when you meet them, treat yourself. Get a pedicure, go to the movies or get that hard back new novel you were going to wait for to come out in paper back.

Team Apparel for the MS Challenge Walk

Are you considering making team shirts or other apparel for the MS Challenge Walk? Consider ordering them through the MS Challenge Walk Spreadshirt page. We have partnered with Spreadshirt to create an easy-to-use application to design and order apparel. The best part about it is that Spreadshirt will donate 20% of each order back to the National MS Society.

Thank You!

Thanks again for your participation in the MS Challenge Walk. If you and/or your team would like to get together to discuss training, fundraising, logistics of the Challenge Walk, please reach out to the MS Challenge Walk Team at mschallengegne@nmss.org. We are happy to assist in any way we can.

Let training walks inspire you!

Written by on Aug 6, 2010

This past Saturday, I drove from Boston to Springfield, Mass., to participate in a training walk sponsored by Gordon's Team. We had perfect weather, cool and dry, and I got in a longer walk than I would have had I stayed at home that weekend.

For me, training walks are a great way to ensure that I get in those longer walks that are necessary for my training. Even more important, they make me feel connected to the MS Challenge Walk. The conversations while walking (or munching on fruit after) re-connect me to other walkers, whether it's their first walk or their ninth. These conversations reaffirm why I participate in the Challenge Walk year after year.

Lace up those shoes and head to the next training walk. There's one this weekend in Brockton, with others on August 22 in Arlington and August 29 in Ayer. Get your miles in, earn some bonus bucks, and get inspired!

Susan lives in the greater Boston area and has been involved with the National MS Society since she was diagnosed with MS in 1995. She has participated in the MS Challenge walk for the past seven years and currently serves on the event's steering committee.

Last-minute parties and resources

Written by on Aug 7, 2009

We are looking forward to the start of the 2009 MS Challenge Walk.  In the past, we have hosted many of you for our MS Challenge Walk Celebration in late August.  This was a chance for you to receive more information about the event, get your Travel and Information Guide and Change of Clothes Bag, have dinner, and hear some inspirational stories from fellow Challenge Walk participants.

In this difficult economic times, we are always looking for ways to cut expenses so that more of the money you raise goes to the mission of the National MS Society.  To that end, we decided not to have a Challenge Walk Celebration this year.  Please know though that the National MS Society will mail all the event information and supplies you need in mid-August.  In the meantime, you can download the 2009 Travel and Information Guide.

If you wish to get an early start on meeting your fellow walkers, we invite you join a training walk in either Lexington or Cape Cod, each which will earn you $50 in bonus bucks. Also be sure to stop by the Cape Codder hotel the evening of Thursday, September 8th, for early check-in and a meet and greet the night before the Challenge Walk itself.

Everyone at the Central New England Chapter is eager to see you in September at the MS Challenge Walk!
